Fantastic stills! Visually this film was unimprovable. (I do think though that, while the cast fit in visually with a perfection equal to that of set and costume design, the film would have benefitted from having two slightly more experienced singers as Sweeney Todd and Mrs Lovett. It wasn't that they were tuneless [not at all!], they just really sounded like non-singers fresh out of singing school.)

Thanks! Actually I thought Carter was a better singer than Depp, but that both were better than I thought they would be.

Re: giant bloodpuddles

That fire toss scene gives me the creeps. I think it's more grotesque than the throat slit scenes.

i love it. my roommate said he'd buy it when it came out but still no sign...*waits*

i must say, however, that the film does no justice to antony and johanna's relationship (or, moreso, how crazytown johanna is), which is understandable since a. it's a subplot and b. the movie would be 3 hours long but I really wish they kept in their songs (especially "kiss me") now that i'm watching stage versions on youtube.

Still annoyed by that young man. I kinda don't pay attention to him when he sings "Johanna", even though the song itself is pretty.

But it's still a great movie. Such lovely images throughout. Sacha Baron Cohen and Tim Spall kicked ass in it too.

Thank you! Why do you dislike Burton? And PS-- where's your icon from?

I love Burton and the look of his films, and some of the songs and segments are great (especially the "by the sea" fantasy), but I've never seen the appeal in the Sweeney Todd story. It's ridiculous, yet not in a kooky interesting way. It has no life to it. Still, it's pretty gorgeous and Bonham Carter and Depp are great.

Never cared much for the story either, but Sondheim's music is what makes it so interesting and gives the story its 'life'. I mean, giving Sweeney a song to sing 'to his razors'? Using his razors as a connection to his past life in many ways - it's genius. Some people just laugh and comment "he's singing about shaving tools, wth?"
I've been listening to this show for quite some time and I find something new in every listen. Most recently? Beggar woman's "alms, alms" and Sweeney's "Luuucyyy" are identical. That Sondheim is a sneaky fella!

Agreed. Mrs. Lovett is one of the most difficult characters to play in existence, and the fact that someone can pull it off garners an automatic award or some sort of recognition, IMO.
